Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix|《

The Order of the Phoenix brings Harry Potter back for his fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft1 and Wizardry2, but life isn’t that easy for the boy who survived The Goblet of Fire. The evil Voldemort is back. Fearing that Hogwarts’ venerable3 Headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, is lying about Voldemort’s return in order to take his job, the Minister for Magic, Cornelius Fudge, appoints a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher to keep watch over Dumbledore and the Hogwarts students. With the help of his friends Hermione and Ron, Harry takes matters into his own hands4.

Good News about the Order of the Phoenix
There are a few things that make Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix cool. The first is that it’s a deep look into Harry Potter’s magical world so you can get to explore more of it than ever. The second cool thing is that Harry Potter and his friends are starting to date. It’s cool to see these three putting the magic they’ve learned (especially Hermione!) to good use. They even start a secret society!
Bad News about the Order of the Phoenix
The worst thing about Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the needless death of a major character. It’s a major change to Harry’s life and it happens almost by accident. If the character had to die it should have been under different circumstances.

Interview

Katie, a young 18-year-old Asian actress, has been playing Cho Chang from the last film. She is very soft spoken and unassuming5.

Q: Was it easy to act opposite Daniel?
Katie: Yeah, definitely. He’s energetic and makes you feel relaxed. He talks to you all the time and tells you not to be nervous; it’s great working with him.
Q: What happens to her character in this film versus the last; does she get to do magic?
Katie: Yeah, Cho Chang actually has a great wand6 in this one. In the last film Harry had a crush on her but she had a boyfriend so nothing happened. But after her boyfriend died, her relationship with Harry developed. Although, she’s bitter through the whole film because she can’t get over her boyfriend’s death. And that kind of complicates their friendship with each other and it ends in disaster.
Q: Is Daniel a good kisser?
Katie: Yes, Daniel is a good kisser, I really enjoyed it.

Q: How different is this Potter?
Dan: Very different so far—this role is more challenging than the ones I’ve done before. Not physically challenging but in terms of7 acting, it’s harder to do this one.
Q: You’re 18. How do you compare your journey to Harry’s?
Dan: It’s the same; he has the same pits8 and troughs9 as any other kid his age. It’s just that they’re exaggerated10 in Harry’s story. I think Harry’s happiest moments are happier than anyone else could ever think of and his saddest moments are again probably more than people could consider.
Q: How do you respond to Katie saying you were a good kisser?
Dan: My God. It was fun; me and Katie—we were awkward and nervous at first but once we got it, it was fine.
Q: Has playing Harry Potter all these years changed you?
Dan: I really don’t know if there has been a huge change in my character as a result of playing Harry. I think I’ve grown up in the way most 10-year-olds grow up into 18-year-olds; I might have grown up a little bit faster possibly than other people my age simply because I’m around so many adults all the time.

Face to Face with Director David Yates.

Q: Harry gets his first kiss in the film; how did you approach the scene?
David: Most of the crew working on these films have been working with Daniel since he was little and the day we shot the kiss, they gathered around the monitor. They needed to see this moment, experienced it, because for them, Daniel was really as much a son, because they’ve seen him go through all these changes as he’s growing up.
And they got quite emotional watching his first kiss, it was a very interesting experience and I wanted to make it feel as real and truthful as possible. We did many, many, many takes and it’s very tender and loving, as the first kiss should be.

Q: In the previous film your look already showed that Hermione was not just a girl anymore. Now it seems that she has really turned into a young woman.
Emma: Yes, and it’s not just about the look. For the first time the young characters really make personal decisions. Harry and his friends have to make difficult decisions alone this time. They have to understand what is right and what is wrong. Yes, they really become adults.
Q: What do you think are you going to do in 2010, when the Harry Potter saga11 is over and you’re twenty? Are you also planning to take part in other projects in the meantime, like Daniel did?
Emma: I won’t be appearing naked on stage with a horse, if that’s what you mean. I’m just seventeen. I would like to live in France for a while, to improve my French, and spend at least a couple of years traveling around the world. Then, when I’m about nineteen, I’ll have to think seriously about my future: the University—I would like to study Philosophy or Literature—and a home.
Q: French—why?
Emma: Because I love France. Paris and Amsterdam are my favorite cities. I also like French cinema, I would love to work there. I actually like almost everything which is not English.
Q: Have you, like Hermione, ever been in conflict with the authority? At school, at home, with your agent...?
Emma: There have been times when other people thought that they knew what was better for me, and that the better for me was not to think. But I’m not a rebel. I usually do what I’m told, if anything I try to negotiate12. I’m ready to fight for my rights, but I don’t think it is worth playing the role of the teenager who wants to rebel against the world. I don’t like it. It is overused.
Q: J.K. Rowling says that Hermione is the character she identifies with13 the most. She says that when she was young she was a pain in the neck14 just like Hermione is. Did you get this impression when you met her?
Emma: J.K. Rowling gives the impression of a very amusing, genuine and incredibly down-to-earth15 woman. And these are very rare qualities.
Q: In The Order of the Phoenix Harry gives his first kiss to Cho Chang. What about Hermione and Ron?
Emma: Now it is clear to everybody that it is not just friendship between them. Everybody except them, of course. It is so typical, girls tend to end up with those guys who most annoy them, who most behave horribly. Ron acts exactly like this towards Hermione. But their relationship will develop somehow, sooner or later. They will become a couple, I’m sure. Ron amuses her, which is what Hermione needs. And she keeps him in line. A perfect couple.

The future of Harry Potter

Some well known directors give their thoughts on how they would direct the last movies in the Harry Potter series before we knew that David Yates was directing Half-Blood Prince:

Tom Tykwer(Perfume): What I like about the Harry Potter series is, the older Harry gets, the more scary the movies are, and I think I would push for the scary parts more than what has been done. I’m curious how far they’re daring to go there.

Edward Zwick (Blood Diamond): At the time of the first Harry Potter, I think my first daughter was 8 or 9. I certainly would have known what to do with that. But now? I don’t know. I think it was wonderful when I saw Alfonso Cuarón’s third episode16 of it. I think he reinvented it. He did a really great job.

Guillermo del Toro(Pan’s Labyrinth): I really love the books, and I think they have a very dark universe—it’s actually darker than the movies have been, up until Alfonso came onboard. Now they have a darker tone. I would love to do one where I can kill one of the characters. I would like to be the guy who ends the franchise17—I come in and destroy everything that everyone else has created!
